Bears out-slug Golden Mules 13-7 in rematch between last year’s co-Section 2 champs
Just a quick post for you …
I just got back from Quarryville, where, in a battle between last year’s Section 2 co-champs, Elizabethtown escaped with a 13-7 L-L League Section 2 win over host Solanco, which rallied valiantly in the second half and nearly pulled one out in its home opener this season.
But E-town held on late, holding off the Golden Mules on downs on their last-gasp, fourth-down effort with under 30 seconds to play from the Bears’ 12-yard line.
With d-ends Dylan Allison and Alex Kirchner bearing down on him, Solanco QB Ben Miller – who was terrific in the second half – was forced to throw on the run. And when E-town LB Shane Rosenberry batted down Miller’s pass, the Bears survived.
You can read a replay of my live blog from this game by clicking right here.
E-town’s Mitch Weidman returned the opening kickoff 92 yards for a score, and that was the only TD the Bears could muster; Shane Long booted a pair of field goals for E-town, which led 13-0 at the break.
It was all Solanco in the second half. The Mules, which saw their two-game winning streak come to a halt, cut it to 13-7 on Miller’s keeper. Solanco had one last chance late, but E-town’s D hunkered down.
The new sod surface at Solanco is gorgeous, by the way. And the new lights are quite sparkly. There’s definitely a fresh feel around the Mules’ refurbished stadium. Nice job.
Up next, E-town (1-0, 3-1) will take on Conestoga Valley (0-1, 0-4) and Solanco (0-1, 2-2) will face Manheim Central (1-0, 2-2).
Please check back here later in the day on Monday. I’ll be posting post-game audio Podcast interviews with Rosenberry, Kirchner and Solanco coach Joe Pearson. So stay tuned for those.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
