Welcome back to another season of Reinhart’s Rankings … my weekly top-five poll in L-L League football.
I wanted to do a preseason poll, but I flat ran out of time before all the Week 1 games. Sorry.
But now that everyone has a game under their belts, I thought I better debut the rankings – which I decided to have a little fun with this week.
I have picks 1 through 4 ready to go. But because I’m such a giving guy, I have a six-way tie for 5th this week.
Hey, these are my rankings – Reinhart’s Rankings. And here’s my Week 1 poll …
1. Wilson (1-0) – The Bulldogs’ defense picked up right where it left off a year ago, holding cross-town rival Governor Mifflin to just 129 total yards in a 35-14 win over the Mustangs, in the 50th meeting between the Berks County rivals. With senior QB Steve Huber on the shelf with a bum knee, sophomore Zach Zweizig was outstanding in his debut under center, completing 12-of-18 passes (no picks) for 166 yards and a pair of TDs for the ‘Dawgs, who are set to welcome Manheim Central in another non-league game on Friday in West Lawn. Circle that one in ink.
2. Manheim Central (1-0) – I said during the preseason that the Barons would get their mojo back this season. And they took no prisoners on Opening Night, drilling Susquehannock 32-10 after churning out 574 yards of total offense. Senior QB Jeremy Knosp was a one-man wrecking crew, piling up 131 rushing yards on 15 keepers (including a pair of TD runs) and he completed 13-of-22 passes for 226 yards and another score for the Barons, who will take on my No. 1 team, Wilson, Friday in West Lawn. Better get there early; this might be the biggest game in District 3 next week.
3. Manheim Township (1-0) – Razorback! The Blue Streaks gouged out 213 rushing yards – including 135 yards on 20 carries by senior RB Dan Wertz in the first half alone – on the way to a 53-0 romp over Ephrata, spoiling Jim Vieland’s coaching debut for the Mountaineers. Township’s defense was also gnarly, holding Ephrata to just 130 yards of total offense. Up next for the Streaks is a rematch of last year’s first-round district-playoff game against Red Lion, Friday at Township. Streaks won last year’s postseason meeting 27-7, by the way.
4. Hempfield (1-0) – I heard a ton of good things about the Black Knights’ new spread O this summer. And Hempfield certainly didn’t disappoint in its opener, toppling Conestoga Valley 41-13 behind senior QB Jarvis Cummings, who had 16 keepers for 166 yards and a pair of TD runs as the Knights cranked out 400 yards of total offense. Hempfield is facing an interesting Week 2 date at Garden Spot, which is coming off a 17-14 win over Warwick. Circle that one for sure.
5. (tie) Annville-Cleona (1-0) – After spending the last two years playing road games, you just knew the Little Dutchmen would be loaded for bear for their season-opener (at home, under the lights) against cross-town rival Palmyra. They were. A-C bolted to a 20-0 lead and Nate Myers had a pair of TD passes and he rushed for a score in the Dutchmen’s 27-15 victory. They’ll try and make it two straight next Friday at Hamburg (0-1).
5. (tie) Cocalico (1-0) – Eagles looked sharp at home against defending District 3 Triple-A champ Lampeter-Strasburg, getting 139 rushing yards from speed demon Kyle Fisher on the way to a convincing 35-21 win over the Pioneers. Fisher had a 72-yard TD sprint and a 5-yard TD run. He also lobbed a 59-yard TD pass to Kyle Rissell on a trick play. Cocalico goes on the road to Berks County on Friday for a non-league date at Exeter (0-1).
5. (tie) Elco (1-0) – The Raiders might have put together the most exciting victory in Week 1, edging Hamburg 21-20 when junior QB Arron Achey called his own number and scored on a 6-yard keeper – his third rushing TD of the game, all in the second half – with 1:58 to play to lift Elco, which trailed 20-0 at the break but rallied valiantly. Up next for the Raiders is a trip to Pine Grove (0-1) Friday. By the way, Achey had 15 keepers for 174 yards, and FB Ben Arnold piled up 116 rushing yards for Elco, which had 349 rushing yards in its opener. Impressive.
5. Elizabethtown (1-0) – A lot of people out there pegged the Bears for a bounce-back-to-earth season, especially after 21 seniors graduated off of last year’s fine co-Section 2 title team. Um, negatory. The Bears rushed for 239 yards and trampled McCaskey 53-7 – in Lancaster. So yeah, E-town did pick up right where it left off last year: playing smash-mouth football, grinding it out on the ground, and playing some inspired D; the Bears held the Red Tornado to just 182 total yards. Up next for E-town is a tester against Berks County contender Muhlenberg (1-0) Friday in E-town.
5. (tie) Garden Spot (1-0) – Must admit that I didn’t see this one coming. The Spartans got a pair of TD receptions from Kyle Kelley and overcome a stellar 195-yard rushing performance by Eric Resch in Garden Spot’s 17-14 win over Warwick. I thought the Spartans would start doing some damage right around the Section 2 opener. Instead, they busted out of the gates with a clutch win over the Warriors, who were 9-2 last year, and have been to Districts the last two years in a row. Spartans host No. 4 Hempfield on Friday. And who thought that game would get the hype that it will now certainly garner?
5. (tie) Penn Manor (1-0) – Break up the Comets. Last year was not fun for Penn Manor, which went 1-9 overall and failed to win a Section 1 game. And then leading rusher Carl Christmas was denied another year of eligibility. But what a start for the Comets, who held off reigning Section 2 co-champ Solanco 14-13 in Millersville behind new feature back Sean Noll, who rushed for 140 yards and a TD. Comets are at home again on Friday, this time against reigning District 3 Triple-A champ Lampeter-Strasburg, which fell to Cocalico 35-21 in its opener.
Maybe next week I’ll just pick five teams.
