He was one of the most rugged, durable running backs in the Lancaster-Lebanon League a year ago – playing in an offensive scheme that, you might have heard, gobbled up some headlines.
When Manheim Township coach Mike Melnyk unveiled his “Razorback” package around midseason, he needed a running back who not only could carry the ball – but a running back who could take direct snaps, hand the ball off or pitch the ball, and even attempt a pass every now and again.
That guy was Dan Wertz, and what a junior season he had for the Blue Streaks, piling up 1,470 yards and 15 touchdowns – while operating primarily out of Township’s funky “Razorback” set.
Wertz helped Township go 7-0 and win the Section 1 title, and advance all the way to District 3 Quad-A semifinals.
A good chunk of talent from that team graduated. But a good chunk of talent – spearheaded by Wertz – will return this fall.
Wertz will also be one of the top returning lacrosse players in the league next spring.
Here’s a scoop for you: Wertz told me he has accepted a scholarship offer to continue his scholastic and lacrosse careers at … Ohio State University.
I chatted with Wertz last Saturday after Township scrimmaged Lampeter-Strasburg.
In this audio Podcast interview, hear Wertz recap last year’s success; talk about Township’s prospects for this season; and break the news that he’s headed to Ohio State to play lacrosse next year.
