JEFFREY REINHART jreinhart@LNPnews.com
Tennis anyone?
She is a two-time reigning Lancaster-Lebanon League girls’ tennis finalist.
She is the reigning District 3 Triple-A girls’ tennis singles champion.
She qualified for the PIAA Tournament for the first time last fall, won her first-round match and advanced to the state quarterfinals.
She attends one school. But she plays tennis for another.
And when the girls’ tennis season gets started in a couple of weeks, she’ll very likely have a big bull’s-eye on her back.
Say hello to Leah Rutt, who will be a junior at Lancaster Christian this fall.
But when it comes to high school tennis, Rutt plies her trade for McCaskey, thanks to a cooperative agreement between the schools.
Rutt will be gunning for her third trip in a row to the L-L League finals – she dropped a heartbreaker to former Hempfield standout Lauren Hankle last season – and she has that District 3 Triple-A title to defend.
And she’d love a deeper trip in the state tournament.
It all starts Monday, Aug. 11, when fall practice begins.
In this audio interview Podcast, hear Leah talk about her success last season – about getting back to the league final and winning the district title; about how the cooperative program works, and how she can attend Lancaster Christian during the day, but play tennis for McCaskey; about how her game has improved this summer; and about other top players returning to the league this fall – and how they’ll all be coming after her.
