LANCASTER-LEBANON LEAGUE COMMUNITY MOURNING THE LOSS OF PENN MANOR TEACHER AND BOYS’ BASKETBALL COACH JEFF CHURCHILL

Heard about this Monday night, and my jaw dropped. Just incredibly sad news. This is from Tuesday’s daily papers:

Jeffrey S. Churchill

Jeffrey S. Churchill, 31, of Willow Street, died unexpectedly on Sunday, July 27, 2008 at Lancaster General Hospital.

Born in San Diego, CA, Jeff was the son of Wanda L. (Beals) Churchill of Altoona, and the late Dayle L. Churchill. He was married to Jacqueline M. (Nugent) Churchill in 2005, and celebrated the birth of their daughter, Kaitlin Christine in 2007.

Jeff was a 1994 graduate of Altoona Area High School, where he was a member of the basketball team. He earned a four-year athletic scholarship to St. Francis University to play on their Red Flash asketball team. He graduated from St. Francis University in 1999 with Bachelor of Science degrees in biology and secondary education.

Jeff was employed by Penn Manor School District as a special education teacher in the emotional support classroom for five years. He was the head coach for the Penn Manor boys’ varsity basketball team. Jeff was named 2005-06 Coach of the Year for Section 1 basketball, and 2006-07 Outstanding Coach of the Year for Penn Manor School District.

He loved spending time with his daughter Kaitlin and wife Jackie, and his family and friends. He enjoyed playing golf, going to the beach, playing basketball, and was an avid Celtics fan, and a guitar hero.

In addition to his wife and mother, Jeff is survived by his daughter, Kaitlin C. Churchill, at home; brother, David T. Churchill of Altoona, aunts, Patricia Palazzi, Barbara Civiello, and uncle, Tom Beals, husband of Tina, all of Altoona, father and mother-in-law, Charles J. and Christine Nugent of Lancaster, brother-in-law, Charles J. Nugent, Jr., husband of Kim, and their son CJ, and sisters-in-law, Rachel E., Kelly A., Colleen M., Megan T., Moira K., Anne K. Nugent, and Amy Rohman, wife of Adam.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service on Thursday, July 31st at 10 AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 119 S. Prince St., Lancaster, PA with Msgr. John Jagodzinski officiating. Interment will be at St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery. Viewings will be held on Wednesday evening from 6 until 9 PM at Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home, 441 N. George St., Millersville, PA, 717-872-5041, and again on Thursday morning from 8:30 until 10 AM at St. Mary’s. I, too, was shocked to see his obit in the paper.

My sympathies to his family.

I enjoyed watching his coaching technique from the stands, whenever Central play Penn Manor. He was a class act. He will be missed by many.

Does anyone know the cause of death? He was so young and active.

Condolences to the family and staff/students at Penn Manor HS.

They did a piece about him on WGAL last night, and they mentioned that he died from a "heart defect". I was wondering if it might be undiagnosed long QT syndrome.

Definition
Long QT syndrome (LQTS) is a heart rhythm disorder that can potentially cause fast, chaotic heartbeats. The rapid heartbeats, caused by changes in the part of your heart that causes it to beat, may lead to fainting. In some cases, your heart's rhythm may beat so erratically that it can cause sudden death.

You can be born with a genetic mutation that puts you at risk of long QT syndrome. In addition, more than 50 medications, many of them common, may cause long QT syndrome. Medical conditions, such as congenital heart defects, also may cause long QT syndrome.

Long QT syndrome is treatable. You may need to limit your physical activity, avoid certain medications that can cause the condition or take medications to prevent a chaotic heart rhythm (arrhythmia). Some people with long QT syndrome also need an implantable device to control the heart's rhythm and to prevent against sudden death.

What a sad situation. Penn Manor finally had a coach that brought some hope back to the basketball team and something like this happens. My thoughts go out to his wife and infant daughter. As for cause of death, someone on a thread last night, suggested Marfans Syndrome? I can't imagine it was what you suggested LFM, he wouldn't have been able to play D1 basketball if if had that??

Lysol, I have some family members who were diagnosed with Long QT, and I had to get my own children evaluated. One of my relatives had to stop a promising soccer career when this was discovered. If you don't know you have it and keep up with your regular sports---especially those that involve a lot of running and bursts of adrenaline--you can be one of those athletes who drops over dead on the field with no warning.

Yeah you read about cases like that just about every year. I just didn't think someone who played D1 ball would be able to compete on that level with it. I mean i know there are other kinds of problems,(murmurs, etc) that can cause the same thing.

I had gotten to know Jeff over the last few years and always thought of him as a class act and a true gentlemen. He will be missed.
