Former Conestoga Valley volleyball standout Kim Glass is named to U.S. Team; she’ll join former Cocalico field standout Dana Sensenig in Beijing for Summer Games next month.
It’s official: Kim Glass is an Olympian.
Glass, a Conestoga Valley grad, found out Wednesday that she is one of 12 players selected to the U.S. women’s national volleyball team, which will partcipate in next months Summer Games in Beijing, China.
She is the second Lancaster Countian to earn a trip to China. Earlier this summer, Cocalico grad Dana Sensenig was selected to play for the U.S. women’s field hockey team.
It’s the first time in 32 years that Lancaster County has sent more than one athlete to the Olympics. In 1976, Sam Bigler and William Beldon both participated in the Summer Games in Munich. Bigler was a weightlifter, while Beldon participated in rowing.
The 6-foot, 3-inch Glass will play opposite hitter for the United States. She is joined on the team by middle blocker Daniell Scott-Arruda, who is participating in her fourth Olympics. The 35-year-old Scott-Arruda has been part of the national team since 1994, and is just the second woman to qualify for four Olympic teams.
Outside hitter Logan Tom, libero Stacy Sykora, middle blocker Heather Bown and setter Robyn Ah Mow-Santos all will make their third Olympic teams.
Also on the roster were opposite Tayyiba Haneef-Park, setter Lindsey Berg, middle blocker Jennifer Joines, libero Nicole Davis and outside hitters Kim Willoughby and Ogonna Nnamani.
Coach “Jenny” Lang Ping makes her third Olympic appearance. She was an outside hitter on the Chinese national team that won the gold medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
She also coached the Chinese women to a silver medal at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. According to the international volleyball federation, Lang joins former Hungary coach Gabriella Kotsis as the only women to coach national teams in multiple Olympics.
