Spring sports season finish line is upon us

First, a friendly reminder: Vacation next week (June 9-14). Yeah, yeah, I know: We just got back from a two-week cross-country excursion. This time we’re going to the beach for a week. More on that, plus my diet, later.

Holy cow – The finish line is upon us.

We’re down to just a few teams still toiling in spring sports.

Before I go any further, a tip of the cap to Garden Spot and Hempfield’s boys’ volleyball teams, who reached the state semifinals over the weekend. It was a memorable first trip to States for Garden Spot. And while Hempfield didn’t win its third PIAA title in a row, it was another unforgettable ride for the Black Knights.

PIAA PLAYOFFS
FIRST ROUND

QUAD-A

District 3 champ Warwick vs. District 1 fourth-place finisher Conestoga, Monday, 6:30 p.m. at Ephrata War Memorial Field.

Winner gets: District 6 champ Central Mountain or District 7 runner-up Plum in the state quarterfinals on Thursday.

District 3 third-place finisher Hempfield vs. District 1 champ North Penn, Monday, 4 p.m. at Memorial Park in Quakertown.

Winner gets: District 12 champ Frankford or District 1 third-place finisher Avon Grove in the state quarterfinals on Thursday.

DOUBLE-A

District 3 champ Lancaster Catholic vs. District 1 champ New Hope-Solebury, Monday, 4 p.m. at Ephrata War Memorial Field.

Winner gets: District 4 champ Loyalsock or District 2 champ Scranton Prep in the state quarterfinals on Thursday.

PIAA baseball championship games are set for Friday, June 13 at Blair County Ballpark in Altoona.

District 3 runner-up Donegal vs. District 1 champ St. Basil Academy, Monday at 4 p.m. at Spring-Ford High School.

Winner gets: District 11 champ Palisades or District 1 champ Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts in the state quarterfinals on Thursday.

DOUBLE-A

District 3 runner-up Pequea Valley vs. District 4 champ Loyalsock, Monday at 4 p.m. at Elm Park in Williamsport.

Winner gets: District 2 champ Nanticoke or District 11 champ Penn-Argyl on Thursday in the state semifinals.

PIAA softball championship games are set for Friday, June 13 at Robb Field at Shippensburg University.

District 3 fourth-place finisher Lancaster Mennonite vs. District 3 fifth-place finisher Wyomissing, Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in Hersheypark Stadium.

Winner gets: District 2 runner-up Holy Redeemer or District 3 runner-up Fleetwood in the state championship game on Friday at 5 p.m. in Hersheypark Stadium.

STATE PLAYOFFS
SEMIFINALS

Central Pennsylvania Scholastic Lacrosse Association champ Manheim Township vs. Western Pennsylvania Scholastic Lacrosse Association champ Mt. Lebanon will play in a state semifinal on Tuesday at a site and time to be announced.

The state championship match is set for Friday, June 6 at Millersville University’s Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium.
