So very happy that my daughter Sarah and I were able to stick our heads in over at Garden Spot on Saturday for the Hoops for Hope 3-on-3 charity basketball tournament for former Garden Spot student-athlete Andrew Nolt, who was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma cancer.
Garden Spot seniors Chrissy Taylor and Chelsea Usner co-organized the event, and I must say that a fun time was being had by all when I was over there in the gym.
They had games being played on six courts in the big varsity gym – good basketball, too.
Former Garden Spot standout and current St. Joe’s University player Todd O’Brien was there. Garden Spot girls’ coach Kevin Gensemer and a handful of current and former Spartans’ boys’ and girls’ players were also playing.
And it was great seeing former Lebanon standouts Meagan Strohman and Abbey Leibig, former Garden Spot star Katie Imes, and the three-headed monster team of Lancaster Mennonite’s Dani Zeamer and Erin LaVenice and Lancaster Catholic’s Brittany Ryder all playing on the girls’ side.
Zeamer, LaVenice and Ryder comprised the ‘purple team’ and they won both games I watched – the second in OT over Strohman, Leibig and the red Lebanon squad.
And thanks to my new handy dandy camera phone, I was able to snap a shot of Zeamer, LaVenice and Ryder on the bench between games, taking a break from talking strategy.
It’s not the greatest picture of all time, but remember: I’m a writer, not a photographer. And it’s a camera phone, for crying out loud.
It was awesome to see so many people at Garden Spot pitching in – they had Hoops for Hope t-shirts, tons of food and drinks, auction stuff and prizes for the winners.
