Diet update

JEFFREY REINHART jreinhart@LNPnews.com

Another week, another trip up the stairs to the bathroom to hop on the scale.

First of all, let me say how thrilled I am that this is actually working. I still can’t believe it, but the weight is coming off, which, in turn, keeps me motivated to stay on the straight and narrow. I’ve had my moments, but I’ve really hung in there.

That said, I know I’m eventually going to plateau, and that’s always the toughest time for me because that’s when I tend to give up and give in and start gorging again. I’m already trying not to think about it.

But through two weeks, I’m cranking – and I’m shrinking. I’ve started to notice it in my face, and I’m beginning to see places on my body that I haven’t seen for a while. Now there’s a visual for you.

I’ve also noticed that my complexion is better – guess that’s because I haven’t been eating greasy double cheeseburgers and french fries at 11 p.m. for the last 15 days.

Mmmmm, double cheeseburgers.

Here’s the update … drum roll please …

STARTING WEIGHT: 319.
LAST UPDATE: May 15 – 310.
CURRENT WEIGHT: 297.
NOTABLE: Wow, I lost 13 pounds in the last week, and I’m down 22 pounds overall. And no more ‘3’ at the beginning of my weight, which is a nice motivator. … Yeah, I’m stunned too.

Thanks for playing along – I’ll have another update next week.

Diets do not work. It is all about moderate portions and moderate exercise. If you diet, you will more than likely fail. If you get to 200 pounds and think it's a success, you are wrong. Ask yourself in 5-10 years if you were successful...see if you gain the weight back.

Eat what you want but in moderation and continue to exercise 4-5 times/week for 30 minutes for a lifetime. Drink when you are thirsty and make it 90% water or unsweetened iced tea. The other 10% you can treat yourself to whatever.

Good luck.

You can do temporarily reach your goal by dieting. You will permanantly reach your goal by allowing yourself what you want to eat...in moderation.

I like to drink one smoothie a day.

one cup soy milk

one cup OJ

6 strawberries

6 chunks frozen pineapple

one bannana

ice chunks as required.

Diets do not work.

I think you are confusing dieting with maintenance of pounds lost. Dieting does work, if I eat a lot of fatty foods and do not exercise, well that diet will work just fine, unless my goal is to be thinner! wink.gif

Keep up the good work, Jeffrey, many of us are rooting for you to be sucessfull, at dieting and maintaining a healthy weight. cheer1.gif

Congratulations Jeff! 9 lbs in a week is awesome. Keep it up. I always find that once I start losing, that keeps me motivated.

WATER

#1. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated.
(Likely applies to half the world population.)

#2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak
that it is mistaken for hunger.

#3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as 3%.

#4. One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs
for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of
Washington study.

#5. Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.

#6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of
water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain
for up to 80% of sufferers.

#7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term
memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on
the computer screen or on a printed page.

#8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of
colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast
cancer by 79%., and one is 50% less likely to develop
bladder cancer.
Are you drinking the amount of water
you should drink every day?
oh geez

Okay heres my problem how do I make it through the weekend without binging

dragonrider: I successfully lost 40 lbs. over a year's time and have kept most of it off. Kicking my metabolism into gear and counting every calorie that I ate was what did the trick.

Weekends were the toughest. After I lost the first twenty, I allowed myself one day a week where I ate what I wanted. Funny thing happened: I didn't eat as much as I could have. One thing you can do is to increase your exercise on the weekends and eat a little bit more. A treadmill in front of a TV can keep you busy or a 'walking CD' or tape you can listen to with earphones. Or just music that you love to listen to. That's another thing I did.

Binging on food can be a sign of addiction and you have to address it as an addiction to kick it. Treat yourself to a treadmill instead of a box of Cheetos. That's what I did smile.gif And I found myself addicted to walking on that treadmill. It was fun to keep track of the mileage everyday. And each week it increased. It was really fun to look at my food and exercise diary to see the progress that I made.

Another little trick that has been scientifically proven is that we have an 'emotional' (hungry) side of the brain and an organizational (logical, intelligent) side of the brain. This may sound crazy but of course the food side is the emotional side and so when you are thisclose to a pint of Ben and Jerry's, organize your sock drawer. Line up your shoes in the closet. Sort clothes by color and size. Just do things that are logical and organizational to shut down the emotional side. It makes sense because if your emotional side can take over, then so can your logical side.

By the way: ALL through the dieting for that year, if I was up past 11 p.m. I would eat one to three Hershey Kisses before I went to bed. That way I enjoyed something I loved everyday and never went to bed hungry.
