A night for Ryan

From time to time I have to report some sad news.

But this is some sad news, which hopefully will be turned into a positive event. And from the sounds of it, this should be fantastic. And it’s certainly for a fantastic cause.

When Penn Manor hosts Lampeter-Strasburg in their third annual “Backyard Bash” boys’ lacrosse game this Saturday at 7 p.m. at Comet Field in Millersville, the event will double as a cancer awareness night, and as a tribute for Ryan Weitzel, an L-S senior student/athlete who recently lost his battle with cancer.

Ryan played midfielder for L-S, and recently, the Pioneers’ players wore Ryan’s number – 22 – on the front of their jerseys.

Saturday’s game will be played in honor of Ryan, and proceeds from the night will go to three charities:

The Ryan Weitzel Foundation, the Lance Armstrong Foundation and Hospice of Lancaster County.

For more on this event, you can visit Penn Manor’s lacrosse page here.

If you can’t make it out to Comet Field on Saturday, and you’d like to contribute, you can send donations to: The Ryan Weitzel Foundation, c/o Penny Weitzel, Susquehanna Bank, Willow Street Office, 200 Willow Valley Lakes Drive, P.O. Box 0310, Willow Street, 17584. And please be sure to place “The Ryan Weitzel Foundation” on the memo line.

There will be food and raffles at Comet Field on Saturday night, and everything is going to a terrific cause.

Ryan's death has hit L-S hard. The middle school students performing "Annie Jr" a few weeks ago donated one night's worth of ticket proceeds to Ryan and his family for medical expenses, even though many of the younger kids didn't know Ryan personally. Before the final performance, the cast was saddened to learn that Ryan was being cared for by Hospice. He will be missed, but many students have been blessed by his gracious attitude despite his illness and by the opportunity to reach beyond themselves and care about Ryan.

You KNOW his spirit will be with the LaCrosse team Saturday night as well- I'm sure his team-mates will be spurred on to victory in his memory- a perfect example of what is RIGHT with today's teen society, both the team and the drama group donating to help with Ryan's medical bills....absolutely refreshing to read about this kind of thing!
Rest well Ryan......
