More state preview caps

I put together these caps for Thursday’s paper, featuring the six teams from Lancaster County. FYI: Could get some snow Friday, so stay tuned for the status of the games. I know I will: I’m going to Tyrone for McCaskey vs. State College.

Six Lancaster County girls’ basketball teams begin their quest for a state championship this weekend.

Hempfield and McCaskey in Quad-A, Lancaster Mennonite, Lampeter-Strasburg and Lancaster Catholic in Triple-A, and Lancaster Country Day in Single-A have their dancing shoes on.

Here’s a preview of their first-round games:

QUAD-A

Hempfield (25-5) vs. Spring-Ford (27-3), Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Coatesville: The Black Knights finished fifth in District 3 after winning their second L-L League championship. Top scorer is senior F Analicia Evans (13.9), who is a Pitt-Johnstown recruit. Hempfield is giving up just 33.7 points a game. Won a pair of state games last year, advancing further than any L-L League team. … Spring-Ford finished third in District 1 after winning the Pioneer Athletic Conference title for the third season in a row. The Rams are led by 1,000-point scorers Megan Bedard (15.0) and Allie Kakareka (14.0), senior guards. Bedard, the point, is the leading scorer in the history of the program.

McCaskey (17-10) vs. State College (22-4), Friday, 7 p.m. at Tyrone Area Middle School: The Red Tornado fell to Hempfield in the district fifth-place game, and is back in States for the first time since 2006. Top scorers are senior G Teasia Myers (13.3) and junior G Danee Simms (11.1, 16 3-pointers). Myers has 1,189 career points. McCaskey won the state Triple-A title in 1982. … State College is the District 6 champ, and is led by senior F Emily Suhey, a Villanova recruit who averages 18.4 points. She has 1,486 career points. Her brother, Kevin, is a backup QB for Penn State.

Katelyn Vanderhoff and Lancaster Mennonite face Wilkes-Barre Coughlin in their PIAA opener // LNP photoTRIPLE-A

Lancaster Mennonite (27-4) vs. Wilkes-Barre Coughlin (18-8), Saturday, 1:30 p.m. in Hersheypark Arena: The Blazers are fresh off winning their first district championship, and are allowing just 33.8 points a game. Top scorers are junior G Katelyn Vanderhoff (10.8, 10 3-pointers) and sophomore sub F Erin LaVenice (10.0). … Coughlin beat Nanticoke in the District 2 third-place game, after finishing second in Division 1 of the Wyoming Valley Conference. Top player is junior G Lauren McGinley (14.1).

L-S (23-5) vs. Blue Mountain (23-4), Saturday, 5:30 p.m. at Martz Hall, Pottsville: The Pioneers were the top seed in District 3, but fell to Mennonite in the semifinals and ended up finishing fourth in the tournament. In States for the second year in a row, and won first-round game last season. Leading scorers are junior G Lisa Boyer (12.6, 17 3-pointers), junior F Renee Fritz (10.3) and junior G Danielle Rittenhouse (10.2, 10 3-pointers). … Blue Mountain fell to Allentown Central Catholic in the District 11 finale, after going undefeated in the Schuylkill League. Leading scorer is G Meghan Holobetz (12.6, 25 3-pointers). Coach Ruth Weidman led Pottsville Nativity to state Single-A titles in 1999 and 2000.

Lancaster Catholic (21-10) vs. Villa Maria (21-6), Saturday, 1 p.m. at Norristown: The Crusaders finished sixth in District 3, and coach Lamar Kauffman led Catholic to state Triple-A titles in 1989 and 1996. Kauffman has 623 career victories. Leading scorers are senior F Brittany Ryder (16.7, 16 3-pointers) and junior G Emily Weaver (11.7, 31 3-pointers), and Catholic has 104 team 3-pointers and averages a league-high 61.4 points a game. … Villa Maria is ranked fourth in the state, and fell to Hopewell in last year’s state finale. Knocked off Athletic Association of Catholic Academies foe Mount St. Joseph in the District 1 title game. Key player is 6-1 junior C Erin Mann.

SINGLE-A

Lancaster Country Day (21-4) vs. Sacred Heart (10-18), Saturday, 1 p.m. at Coatesville: Country Day knocked off No. 1 seed Berks Christian in the District 3 third-place game, and is back in States for the second year in a row. Topped Girard College in the first round last year for first state-playoff win in school history. Leading scorer is junior C Lauren Reitz (12.2). … Sacred Heart is the Cinderella story of the Single-A bracket. Finished seventh out of eight teams in the Athletic Association of Catholic Academies, but then upset No. 1 seed Faith Christian in District 1 semifinals, before beating Girard College in the title game. Key player is 5-10 junior F Alex Kemble, who averages 8.1 points and 9.3 rebounds a game.
