L-L VOLLEYBALL STANDOUTS MARIA HORNING AND COURTNEY REINHOLD WILL BE TEAMMATES AT EASTERN UNIVERSITY. BOTH WERE LANCASTER NEWSPAPERS’ ALL-LEAGUE PLAYERS LAST FALL. REINHOLD WAS THE LEAGUE’S PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Two of the top volleyball players in Lancaster County have made their college choices.
And they’re going to the same school and will be roommates in the fall.
L-L League All-Star Maria Horning from Garden Spot and Lancaster Newspapers’ Player of the Year Courtney Reinhold from Cocalico are headed to Eastern University.
Horning, a steady setter who had 750 assists and 100 aces for Garden Spot last fall, helped the Spartans win the Section 2 championship, finish second in the L-L League playoffs, reach the district semifinals, and finish second in the PIAA Triple-A tournament.
Reinhold, an athletic middle hitter who had 247 kills and 63 blocks for Cocalico last fall, helped the Eagles finish second in Section 2, reach the L-L League semifinals and into the District 3 Triple-A tournament.
Reinhold will also play lacrosse for the Eagles.
Eastern, which is located near King-of-Prussia,reached the championship match last fall in its final season in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference.
The Eagles will join the Middle Atlantic States College Athletic Corporation starting this fall.
Horning will be reunited with another former Garden Spot standout — former All-State selection Kara Hildebrand, who was an honorable mention All-American and the PAC Player of the Year two years ago.
She missed all of last season with a broken leg, but will return this fall after taking a medical redshirt.
There are three other former L-L League standouts on coach Mike Birtwistle’s roster, including holdover starters Katie Ressler from Hempfield and Mandy Platt from Cedar Crest. And Lancaster Mennonite grad Steph Weaver was a key reserve last season.
