HEMPFIELD TOPS CATHOLIC IN TOURNEY FINALE, WINS 11th GAME IN A ROW
Busy night on the local hardwoods on Thursday, with a ton of first-round holiday tournament action, a championship game over at Hempfield, plus a non-league game sprinkled in for good measure. Here are the caps:
Analicia Evans pumped in a season-high 21 points and grabbed several key rebounds down the stretch, and Hempfield held off Lancaster Catholic 49-45 on Thursday night to capture the Hempfield Holiday Tournament in Landisville.
Tournament MVP Steph Graver chipped in with 12 points for Hempfield, which won its 11th game in a row and won its own holiday tournament for the fifth time in 12 years.
Maggie Sweeney scored a team-high 14 points for Catholic (6-5 overall), which had won the previous two Hempfield Holiday Tournament titles and six overall.
Evans sparked Hempfield’s game-ending 11-4 run with a 3-pointer, which gave the Black Knights (11-1) a 41-40 lead with 5:12 to play. She scored eight points down the stretch.
Graver, Evans and Catholic’s Brittany Ryder and Molly Holt were named to the All-Tournament Team.

In the consolation round of the Hempfield Holiday Tournament, Katelyn Kreider and all-tournament team pick Katelyn Vanderhoff scored 12 points apiece for the Blazers (10-2), who closed the game on a 27-14 run.
Solanco 48,
Cumberland Valley 46
In the first round of the Solanco Holiday Tournament, the host Golden Mares closed the game on an 18-10 run, and Morgan Erb scored the go-ahead bucket with six seconds to play, sending Solanco (2-7) into tonight’s title game.
CeCe Buzzard scored 13 points and Morgan Jackson added 12 points for the Mares, who overcame a 12-point third-quarter deficit.
Garden Spot 71, York High 31
In the other first-round game of the Solanco Holiday Tournament, Tynesha Faust (14 points), Chrissy Taylor (14), Breana Caldwell (12) and Brittany Hibshman (12) paced the Spartans (5-5), who raced out to a 39-11 lead at the half, setting up an all-Section 2 championship showdown.
Donegal 50,
Susquenita 48
In the consolation round of the Donegal Holiday Tournament, the host Indians (4-6) closed the game on a 10-5 clip and claimed third place behind Alicia McNiff (14 points) and Morgan Kibler (12).
Middletown toppled Dover 45-22 in the title game.
Manheim Township 47,
Shippensburg 46
In the first round of the Lower Dauphin Holiday Tournament, freshman Kiersten Green pumped in a career-high 22 points, and Lisbet Byler hit a foul shot with three seconds to play to give the Blue Streaks (4-6) the lead for good.
Annie Feingold added 10 points for Township, which will face host Lower Dauphin – a 62-31 winner over Carlisle – in tonight’s title game.
Lebanon 55, Exeter 47
In the first round of the Lebanon Holiday Tournament, the host Cedars (5-5) opened the game on a 14-2 blitz and then held off Exeter behind Gemiqua Benjamin (14 points) and Liz Rios (13).

Lebanon Catholic 26
In the other first-round game in the Lebanon Holiday Tournament, state Quad-A power Hollidaysburg outscored the Beavers 34-9 in the second half and advanced to tonight’s title game against the host Cedars.
Hailey Carangelo scored nine points for Lebanon Catholic (4-6), which will be without leading scorer Samantha Carangelo for the next several games while she recuperates from a bout of mononucleosis.
Cedar Crest 52, Red Lion 39
In the first round of the Wilson Holiday Tournament, Meghan Phillips scored 17 points for the Falcons (8-1), who closed the game on a 14-4 clip and advanced to tonight’s title game against the host Bulldogs.
Wilson 62, Cocalico 30
Samantha Weaver scored a season-high 13 points for Cocalico, but the host Bulldogs outscored the Eagles 31-17 in the second half, sending Cocalico (4-7) into tonight’s consolation game opposite Red Lion.
Pottstown 72,
Manheim Central 51
In the first round of the Daniel Boone Holiday Tournament, Bekah Roland (14 points), Kacy Shaw (13), Jana Martin (12) and Dani Artman (11) all came up big for the Barons (8-2), but Pottstown jumped out to a 44-19 lead at the break and cruised past Central, which will face Wyomissing in tonight’s consolation game.
Northern Lebanon 45,
Hanover 40
In the first round of the Hanover Holiday Tournament, Nichole Heister hit three 3-pointers and scored 13 points and Leah Wilhelm added 10 points for the Vikings (2-9), who knocked off the hosts and advanced to tonight’s title game against New Oxford, which topped Greenwood 51-23.
Hershey 58,
Elizabethtown 31
In the first round of the Hershey Holiday Tournament, the host Trojans led 28-13 at the break and sent the Bears into tonight’s consolation game against Greencastle-Antrim.
Becca Bigler scored eight points for E-town, the lone winless team in the L-L League (0-9).
