The first fall L-L League championship is set for Monday, when the top golfers in the league head to Overlook. Harold Zeigler put together this preview capsule for Friday’s New Era:
Lancaster-Lebanon League Golf Championship
WHEN: Monday, 9 a.m.
WHERE: Overlook Golf Course
FORMAT: 18 holes stroke play, both individual and team champions.
TOP PLAYERS: Lancaster Mennonite junior Matt Burkhart returns to defend his title. He won three tournaments this fall and averaged a Section 3 leading 72.0. Teammate David Denlinger also won three tourneys and averaged 73.3. L-S’s Josh Burg won six Section 2 tournaments, tied for first in a seventh, and led everyone with a 71.0 average. Leading Section 1 champ Manheim Township are Connor Lefever (72.7), Austin Wolf (73.2) and Zach Miller (76.5). Miller and Wolf each won two tournaments and tied for first in a third. Lefever won one tournament and tied for first in a second.
TOP TEAMS: Township went 42-0 in Section 1, 48-0 overall. The Streaks are the defending champ and strong favorite to win again. Lampeter-Strasburg, which won Section 2 with a 41-1 record, and Lancaster Mennonite, which captured Section 3 with a 41-1 mark, could challenge. Township beat Mennonite, however, in a non-league tournament in mid-August.
WHAT’S NEXT: The low 28 individual scorers and top team advance to the District 3 championship Oct. 12-13 at Briarwood in York.
