Hard to believe we already have one football game in the books.
But here we are – one game down and nine more to go in the regular season.
I’m going to use this space every week to hand out my 3 Stars – a tip of the cap to the kids who put together the top three individual performances from that weekend’s games.
For Week 1, I’m handing out my 3 Stars to …
** Mike Seibert, Columbia QB – Talk about an unforgettable return. Under center for the first time since breaking his leg in Week 9 last year against Lancaster Catholic, the Crimson Tide’s senior signal-caller shredded Eastern York, completing 8-of-10 passes for 205 yards and three touchdowns — two to Colby Tuell and one to Garrett Mowrer – in Columbia’s 50-6 win. I haven’t done the QB ratings yet, but Seibert’s passing efficiency number is off the charts.
** Travis Dresch, Northern Lebanon RB – Northern Lebanon’s pesky senior feature back picked up right where he left off last fall, carrying 23 times for 177 yards and three TDs in the Vikings’ 34-3 win over Pine Grove. Dresch, who rushed for 1,050 yards and 13 scores last fall, scored on TD runs of 25, 10 and 4 yards, respectively in Northern Lebanon’s opener.
** Kyle III – Three guys named Kyle will get one star apiece from the third spot:
* Kyle Fisher, Cocalico RB – What a night for this kid, who carried 13 times for 126 yards and scored four TDs in the Eagles’ 35-34 upset over Section 3 heavyweight Lampeter-Strasburg. Fisher, a junior, had a pair of 1-yard TD dives, plus a 4-yard TD run and an 18-yard TD run against L-S.
* Kyle Keller, Cocalico RB – The Eagles’ senior was Yin to Fisher’s Yang, gouging out 164 yards on 37 workmanlike carries for Cocalico, which pulled off the season’s first big upset. If you didn’t hear, Cocalico was picked to finish last in Section 2 after going 2-8 last year. L-S was in Districts last year and has a slew of kids back from that team.
* Kyle Youtz, Cedar Crest RB – Youtz had an amazing night in the Cedar Bowl, piling up 178 yards on 29 carries and scoring three TDs for the Falcons, who topped cross-town rival Lebanon 30-19 to snap an eight-game losing streak. Youtz, a senior, had TD runs of 3, 7 and 43 yards in Cedar Crest’s victory.
