Lancaster Mennonite has named a new head boys’ soccer coach to replace Vernon Rice, who resigned his post after 35 years on the job earlier this spring. Mennonite grad and former Messiah College player Fred Winey will take over for Rice, who won more than 500 games coaching Mennonite’s boys’ soccer program. Here is more on Winey from a release from Mennonite:

Lancaster Mennonite High School has named Fred Winey as head soccer coach. He served as assistant men’s soccer coach at Messiah College for the past 10 years, during which the team won five national championships and was in the Final Four for six of the past seven years.

Prior to that he was assistant coach at Elizabethtown High School for three years.Winey has taught health and physical education at Lancaster Mennonite’s Kraybill Campus for the past seven years and will continue to do so with his new coaching assignment. The Kraybill Campus serves grades pre-kindergarten through grade 8.

Winey received his undergraduate degree in health and physical education at Messiah College where he played varsity soccer all four years. During his senior year he was named honorable mention to the Regional All-American team in division III. That year he also served as team captain and led his team to the national quarterfinals.

He graduated from Lancaster Mennonite High School in 1990 after playing on the varsity soccer team for three years. During his senior year he made the All-State Team and was named the L-L League Section MVP.

Mennonite athletic director Mike Yoder is excited about Winey joining the coaching staff.

“He comes with high recommendations from his supervisors both at Kraybill Mennonite and at Messiah College,” Yoder said. “His experiences in coaching within a quality Christian program such as Messiah will be valuable in continuing a strong soccer tradition here at Lancaster Mennonite. He not only knows soccer but also has a desire to work with young people in helping to mold them into quality individuals, both on and off the field. His holistic approach to coaching fits in with the school’s philosophy of creating quality individuals through the experience of athletics.”

Mennonite also named Erin Martin as the new girls’ volleyball coach, and named Weston Shertzer as the new boys’ and girls’ cross country coach. Shertzer replaces his dad, Nelson Shertzer, who stepped down earlier this spring. Weston’s sister, Lindsey, is the reigning New Era Female Athlete of the Year.
