A decade ago, Tommy Long made a name for himself in the Lancaster-Lebanon League as a football and baseball star.

Now the former Lebanon Catholic standout is back with the league — as an athletic director.

Long has been hired to run the athletic program at Ephrata, the school district announced Monday.

He replaces Merv Witmer, who retired at the end of the school year.

“I am extremely excited about the opportunity to work in the Ephrata Area School District,” Long said in press release issued by the school.

“Ephrata was always my first choice. I will be doing the exact job I have always wanted to do.”

Long has a masters degree in sports management from California University of Pennsylvania. He was head baseball coach at Lebanon Catholic and an assistant football coach at Lebanon and Palmyra.

A 1996 Lebanon Catholic grad, Long rushed for a school-record 5,643 yards and 71 touchdowns in his three years as a starter. The football program was dropped in 2001.

Long was also a L-L League all-star in baseball and played for Millersville University while doing his undergraduate studies.

Long and his wife, Jean, have two sons and are expecting their third child in October.

“Ephrata is a perfect fit for me,” Long said in the release. “I was looking for a school and community in which I could become a key player in the lives of students, staff, and community members.”
