Congrats to Eprhata grad Elysia Current, who won the national singles championship last week. She helped Wichita State win the national team title earier this spring. I wrote a story about that, and you can read it here. Cocalico grad Jason Weaver, who bowls for Penn State, also had a strong showing at the national singles championships, finishing in second place. After helping Wichita State win the United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate women’s national team championship last month, Elysia Current had one more item on her wish list.
And last week, the 2003 Ephrata grad crossed that item off — with authority.
Current topped Fresno State’s Karen Rosprim 215-184, 191-189, 214-233, 220-216 and won the USBC women’s singles national championship at the AMF Pin Palace Lanes in Huntsville, Ala.
“I just kept slow, and focused my eyes on my target the whole time,” Current told bowl.com. “I didn’t even worry about anyone else’s scores but my own. I just kept to myself — and it worked.”
Another former Lancaster County bowler just missed out on his own singles national championship.
Representing Penn State, 2004 Cocalico grad Jason Weaver reached the finals of the USBC men’s singles national championship in Huntsville, but fell to Tim Pfeifer of Robert Morris University 3-2 in the title match.
Weaver won the first game 225-152 and the fourth game 222-188.
But Pfeifer won the second and third games, 184-183 and 179-159, respectively, and won the fifth and final game 189-178 and claimed the crown.
Current, a First-Team All-American pick this past season, started her college career at Penn State before transferring to Fairleigh-Dickinson, where she was an All-American last year before transferring to Wichita State — a national bowling powerhouse.
Current helped the Shockers claim the 15th national team crown in program history earlier this spring.
“I came to Wichita State to try and further my bowling career, and I wanted to win national championships,” Current told bowl.com.
“Throughout my college career I’ve done everything on my list, and the singles title was the last thing on that list.”
Weaver had a sensational senior season at Cocalico, winning the state singles title while leading the Eagles to the state team title.
