Saturday morning musings …

April 28th, 2007 · No Comments

Had an hour or so to kill on Saturday morning before hunkering down for the NFL Draft, so I thought I’d put a rant (or two) together.
Some random thoughts …
** Not sure how long I’ll be able to take Chris Berman and Mel Kiper Jr., but I will be watching. I’m so, so tired of […]

3 local women play for Central PA Vipers

April 28th, 2007 · No Comments

Had a chance to visit with 3 members of the semi-pro Central Pennsylvania Vipers women’s football team on Friday night. The Vipers play in the National Women’s Football Association, which has 34 teams across the country. Here is their story, from my story in Saturday’s New Era:

HARRISBURG – It looked and sounded like any other […]

F&M women’s lacrosse No. 1 in the country!

April 27th, 2007 · No Comments

I’ll bet you didn’t know Franklin & Marshall’s women’s lacrosse team is ranked No. 1 in the country. I ventured over to F&M on Thursday to get a glimpse of the Diplomats as they prepped for the Centennial Conference playoffs, on tap for this weekend at F&M. Nothing like home-advantage in the playoffs. The Diplomats […]

Mennonite girls’ soccer: No. 1 in the state

April 26th, 2007 · No Comments

Finally got the chance to see Lancaster Mennonite’s shiny new soccer/field hockey stadium on Wednesday. There is still plenty of construction going on at the site, but it sure is nice — especially the A-Turf field, which held up quite nicely in the rain. If you haven’t heard, the Blazers are ranked No. 1 in […]

News, notes and random thoughts …

Nothing like a quick rant on a Wednesday afternoon …
Was driving through Lancaster County the other evening when I realized that the Phillies were coming on. It was like 6:57 p.m.That’s when I realized that Lancaster no longer has a radio station that carries the Phillies.
I was stunned when 1490-WLPA dropped the Phillies two years […]

Crazy softball game: 21 innings, 2 days, 1 winner …

April 25th, 2007 · No Comments

It took two days and 21 innings to complete, but Warwick held off Conestoga Valley 1-0 in one heck of a crazy Lancaster-Lebanon League girls’ softball game. Here’s the scoop from my story in Wednesday’s New Era:
It took 21 grueling innings over two different days, but Warwick finally defeated Conestoga Valley 1-0 in one of […]

Township’s Stratton joins 500 club

April 25th, 2007 · No Comments

Had the pleasure of watching a major milestone in person on Tuesday, when Manheim Township senior attacker Tim Stratton joined the 500-career-point club. How exclusive is that club? Read on. Here’s my story from Wednesday’s New Era:

It is an ultra exclusive club.
In fact, before Tuesday afternoon, there were just three members.
Now there are four.
Manheim Township senior attacker […]

Fantastic Freshman

April 24th, 2007 · No Comments

Was at Garden Spot on Monday to watch the Spartans’ outstanding freshman track athlete, Liz Martin, in action against Lebanon. She’s having an incredible rookie season in New Holland. Here’s my column from Tuesday’s New Era:
Sometimes, big things really do come in small packages.
Liz Martin – all 5-2 and 110 pounds of her, bless her […]

Hinkle, Benner shine on the mound

April 24th, 2007 · No Comments

Two Lancaster-Lebanon League athletes had outstanding pitching performances on Monday:
BRANDON HINKLE, Hempfield – The Black Knights’ sophomore tossed a no-hitter in Hempfield’s 2-0 win over Cocalico in a Section 1-2 crossover game. Hinkle allowed just three walks and struck out 12 for the Knights.
BECKY BENNER, Conestoga Valley – The Buckskins’ senior ace pitched a perfect […]

Zug earning his wings at Penn State

April 23rd, 2007 · No Comments

Got a chance to catch up with former Manheim Central standout Graham Zug last Saturday during Penn State’s Blue/White Game festivities. Zug, a redshirt freshman, plays wideout for the Nittany Lions, so he’s behind a solid group of guys at that position. But he’s had a great spring. Here’s my column from Monday’s New Era:
UNIVERSITY […]

Just confirming: Souder does leave Ephrata post

April 23rd, 2007 · No Comments

Loren Souder has stepped down as Ephrata’s head girls’ basketball coach.
I reported that earlier after seeing a blurb in the Sunday News about Ephrata being in search of a new girls’ basketball coach.
I heard from Loren on Monday, and he confirmed that he had indeed submitted his resignation and was stepping away from the progam […]

Notes from Penn State’s Blue/White Game

April 23rd, 2007 · No Comments

Here’s the notebook story I sent in for Monday’s New Era from the Blue/White Game on Saturday.

UNIVERSITY PARK – Penn State fans paid tribute to the victims of the tragedy at Virginia Tech during the Blue/White Game on Saturday.
And it was Quarryville native and Solanco grad Bill Solomon who helped set up a good chunk […]

Another L-L League girls’ basketball coaching vacancy

April 22nd, 2007 · No Comments

There is another vacancy in the Lancaster-Lebanon League girls’ basketball coaching ranks.
Can’t say I’m breaking this story, because according to a blub in the Sunday News today, Ephrata is advertising for a new girls’ varsity basketball coach, meaning Loren Souder is no longer on board with the Mountaineers.
So I can’t say for sure why he’s […]

A night in the life of a baseball junkie

April 20th, 2007 · No Comments

I am a huge baseball fan. Ask my wife. From April until October, most evenings you can find me parked on my couch, remote control in hand, watching the Phillies (or whatever other baseball game is on - and there are usually plenty to choose from these days). And if I can’t get in front […]

Random thoughts on a sunny Friday morning …

(WARNING: rants to follow)

It’s getting excruciatingly tougher and tougher to watch and/or listen to Phillies games. And not just because the Fightins’ are terrible. These announcers are brutal. I was a Scott Graham fan (he was as close as you can get to being a homer, without actually […]

Penn Manor girls’ lacrosse: back in business

April 20th, 2007 · No Comments

Was in Lampeter on Thursday for L-L League girls’ lacrosse, featuring host L-S taking on Penn Manor, which appears to be back on track after a ‘down’ season a year ago. The Comets won back-to-back championships the two years prior to that, and they’re playing like they want those titles back. Here’s my column from […]
