FINAL L-L League girls’ basketball regular-season notebook 2-10-07

February 10th, 2007 8:48 pm ·

McCaskey junior Teasia Myers finished second in the L-L League scoring race // LNP photoI spent Saturday morning scouring my Lancaster-Lebanon League girls’ basketball stat sheets one last time before I tuck away the regular-season stuff and put the postseason stuff on the front burner.

I found some pretty interesting things, which I’ll chronicle for you here now, in my final L-L League girls’ basketball notebook before the playoffs get cranking.

If you’re looking for oddball stats and notes, you’ve come to the right place. Enjoy …

Once again, a tip of the cap to the section champs:

Cedar Crest in 1, Conestoga Valley in 2, Lebanon in 3 and Lancaster Catholic in 4.

For the record, I picked McCaskey in Section 1, CV in Section 2, Manheim Central in Section 3 and Lancaster Catholic in Section 4.

Two outta four ain’t so bad, I guess. I promise to do better next season.

OK, on to some news, notes and plenty of stats and figures.

Buckle up – I have a ton of interesting things to share with you:

STAR WATCH: Top performances from Thursday – the last night of league play …

  • Cocalico junior forward CariBeth Shappell scored a career-high 27 points in the Eagles’ 67-52 loss to CV. Shappell’s previous high was 26 points on Jan. 19 in a 49-48 win over Solanco. Here’s an interesting blurb for you: Solanco made a great run and nearly made the league playoffs for the first time since 1996. But the Golden Mares, who were tied for second heading into the last night of league play (and, to add insult to injury, owned the tiebreaker with Garden Spot), dropped both games against Cocalico, which only won three league games all season – the two against Solanco were enough to deny the Mares a playoff spot. See, sometimes playing spoiler isn’t such a bad thing.
  • CV’s high-scoring backcourt tandem of senior Caitlyn Dillard and junior Allison Bauer had season-best efforts in the Buckskins’ regular-season finale. Dillard put a bow on the scoring title with a season-high 28 points, and Bauer added a season-high 21 points (plus three 3’s) in CV’s 67-52 win over Cocalico.
  • Elizabethtown guard Liz Bard capped her solid senior season with 18 points in the Bears’ 52-48 win over Solanco, which officially knocked the Mares out of the playoff chase. In her final nine games, Bard scored 140 points (15.6 per game) and hit five 3’s. E-town won three of its final five games to finish on a positive note.
  • Solanco forward Tracee Harrison finished her breakout senior season with a flourish, scoring 19 points in the Mares’ 52-38 loss to E-town. In her last six games, Harrison scored 108 points (18.0 per) and Solanco went 4-2 in those games. But losses to Cocalico and E-town in the last week cost the Mares a shot at the postseason. But watch out for 2007-08: Solanco will return four starters.
  • Columbia senior forward Tara Anspach scored 18 points, grabbed 10 boards and forced seven steals in the Crimson Tide’s 83-41 setback to Lancaster Catholic. But the good news is that it looks like Columbia will make the District 3 Double-A playoffs, despite its 6-17 overall record.
  • Lebanon Catholic freshman guard Hailey Carangelo (back on the court after missing the previous two games because of illness) scored a career-high 14 points in the Beavers’ 56-32 win over cross-town rival Annville-Cleona, which clinched second place in Section 4.
  • Penn Manor junior forward Kelsey Caruthers pumped in 22 points in the Comets’ 53-43 loss to Warwick. Caruthers will begin her senior season with 874 career points.
  • Elco freshman forward Kala Yoders (what a bright future this kid is going to have) scored a career-high 18 points in the Raiders’ 46-41 loss to Manheim Central.
  • And one last star from Friday’s one-game Section 1 playoff: Cedar Crest junior guard Aubrey Hoover scored 16 points in the Falcons’ thrill-a-minute 44-43 victory over McCaskey. Hoover made the Red Tornado pay several times with press-break layups.
