God, and the help of lots of human volunteers, made Witness 2008 a success

(There was some kind of a glitch and the type for Monday’s “CrossRock” done got erased! So here ’tis againe …)
“What we envisioned as something that would maybe draw 2,000 people wound up having 3,000 to 5,000 people our first year.
“But that wasn’t the end of it … then the funding started coming in, and all of a sudden this (event), through God’s direction, has blossomed into a pretty major festival.”
That’s what Witness Festival organizer Craig Deibler said about the Quarryville Christian music-and-culture event, which marked its very successful return this past Saturday.
Deibler, in an interview last week before the event, credited the 200 or more volunteers who worked the event.
Deibler, a veteran businessman who owns a Quarryville Christian-music-and-books hub, had a vision for the free festival before the first event was held, in 2002.
But give the glory to God, and not to his work … even though it was a lot, he said.
“I don’t need the showcase of the whole thing, because I just get blessed when I can stand back and see it unfold.”
That’s because what he really likes is “to have fathers and sons walk down the aisle and change their lives” by making a decision for Christ, he said: “That’s what makes it all worthwhile.”
If the focus ever starts being on the people who run the Witness festival in Quarryville — instead of where it should be, on God — it will start to have trouble, Deibler said.
Coverage of the event estimated there may have been up to 8,000 people in Quarryville’s Memorial Park late Saturday afternoon, which was during a hot, humid time of things here in Lancaster County.
Organizers say now is even more the time for donors to step up and help the festival, which is run by volunteers but must pay performers and a slew of other costs.
Organizers like Deibler hope to bring Witness back for 2009, but there’s no word yet on when, or even whether, that will happen.
“In order to keep this ministry a free event, we are asking that you would please prayerfully consider making a donation to Witness Ministries,” as the event’s Web page (www.witnessfestival.com) states.
Donations can be sent to: Witness Ministries, P.O. Box 66, Quarryville PA 17566. Call 717-806-2009 for more information.

Did you guys see the picture in yesterday's paper of the crowd at this event? A bunch of kids, hands stretched out with eyes closed or glazed over. My description doesn't do it justice, but man was it creepy.

GeezUS 6/16/08 6:55 PM | Nothing weird about that picture. If I didn't know any better, I'd say that same picture could have been taken at a Hannah Montana concert.

Yeah, except the kids doing that at a Hanna Montana concert would be about half the age. These kids looked like brainwashed zombies.

I any case I wish O'Connor would get rid of his own creepy photo. Gives me nightmares about Fire Island S&M Vampire Zombies. |

It was in an article in the print edition of the Sunday News, about the concert. I assumed the blog was about that article. I don't know if they have the pic on-line or not.

tugrad 6/16/08 10:49 PM | Let me make sure I understand this correctly. It is ok to gather and proclaim you love of Christ but it isn't ok to gather and proclaim your love for a person of the same sex? |

Their eyes don't look very glazed over to me. They look like they are enjoying themselves and that's about it.

fuego 6/16/08 11:14 PM | Eh, the one girl in the lower right looks like she's not quite all there, but the rest of them don't really look creepy or glassy-eyed to me. |
Nativeson 6/16/08 11:28 PM | What is it about this that brings out the anti-Christ in you? They look like a nice enough group of people. They're a bit camera shy and wouldn't need to be. For an outdoor concert crowd their clothes cover their unseemly parts just fine. How unusual!
Think of it as Lancaster's Woodstock without the chemically enhanced section, the beer cans, nudity and the armed biker mommas threatening to bring vigilante justice to anyone who raped a woman at the festival per a hippy friend of mine.
Was that really the picture on which you were commenting?

Anti-Christ? Just because the picture creeps me out? Anytime I see a large group of people all doing the same thing, as if they are puppets, or zombies, it creeps me out. I just thought it looked a bit like the scene from night of the living dead. I couldn't care less about what clothes they are or aren't wearing.

Wonder 6/29/08 1:03 AM | I believe the young people in the picture were either listening to "Stellar Kart" or "Barlow Girl" when that picture was taken. I believe it was "Stellar Kart". They were having good clean fun. The Barlow girls advocate celebacy. They straight out told those same young people to share themselves with someone of the opposite sex only... and to save physical intimacy for marriage. The Barlows do not even date. They are certain that God will provide their perfect mate.
And YES....it is okay to Praise the Lord, Jesus Christ in public.
tugrad. A man with a man and a woman lying with a woman is an abomination [according to my opinion which also is supported by Christian scripture]. So YES...it is NOT okay to shout homosexual lifestyle advocacy in the same way that these innocent young people were praising God. I would hope that you were joking.
Shawn. I am very sorry that you mistake pure innocent joy for something ugly. Mainly, I feel sorry for you that you missed out on such good and joyful innocent feelings....and cannot identify with them. |
