Selling a cell phone ban in cars

Jacy Good is hoping to turn tragedy into advocacy.

Jacy Good, right, and Steve Johnson, her boyfriend (LNP Archive).

You may remember Good as the young Lancaster County woman who in 2008 became teh victim of a horrific car accident while on her way home from her college graduation. The accident left Good in a coma and claimed the lives of both her parents.

Good, who’s rehabbing now in New York state, is about to become the face and voice of a movement by state Rep. Josh Shapiro to ban cell phone use in cars. What makes Good a compelling spokeswoman for the movement is her accident happened after another driver, an 18-year-old young man, ran a red light while answering his cell phone. That caused a tractor trailer to swerve into the path of the Good’s car.

She’s expected to take part in a press conference a week from tomorrow in Harrisburg with Shapiro, a Democrat from Abington who’s been trying since 2005 to enact a law banning the use of handheld devices while driving.

More details including interviews with Good and Shapiro in tomorrow’s Intell. I’ll also look at the opposition to such a ban.

Post your thoughts and comments about this blog post.
I love the story about the woman who was breast feeding her infant, talking on the phone and driving. Wow!

While talented, I certainly have no respect for a woman who would put her baby at-risk like that.
