EVENING COFFEE: Cancer fighting coffee

February 27th, 2009 5:28 pm · 0 comments

A rare Friday for ”Evening Coffee” due to a quirk in our reporter schedule.

I feel vindicated this afternoon. From FOX News:

A cup of joe a day may help keep skin cancer away: A new study shows that caffeine helps kill off human cells damaged by ultraviolet light, one of the key triggers of several types of skin cancer.

The finding, detailed in Feb. 26 online issue of the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, could one day lead to the development of caffeine creams or ointments to help reverse the effects of UV damage in humans and prevent some skin cancers.

So fill up a mug, friends! Fight cancer with coffee!

Bill Ayers (LNP Archive)If you’ve been following news coverage of the Bill Ayers/Millersville University story, regarding whether or not an “anti-terrorism” unit is coming in to provide security, then you know two varying versions of what happened have appeared in the Intelligencer Journal and the Lancaster New Era. Depending on which paper you read, either MU asked for security help or the South Central Task Force (that anti-terrorism organization, funded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security) reached out to MU about using the Ayers event for a training exercise.

Two things I’ll say about this whole thing - first, since Millersville University officials and Randy Gockley, a member of the South Central Task Force’s board of directors stood by the story they told me, as was reported in the New Era, we the Intell have nothing to correct.

And second, does anyone out there really care at this point who asked whom? So long as everyone is safe, isn’t that the main goal?

Our little political world just keeps spinning around.

*Vice President Joe Biden was back in Pennsylvania today. You know, President Barack Obama’s been accused of being on a perpetual campaign. That’s evident by the fact that the vice president has been to Pennsylvania twice in the last few weeks, which makes a prominent Democrat visible in a state that’s turning bluer by the year.

*Rainy Friday afternoon. Shame because it felt positively like April out there. Oh well. Figured I’d finish the week with one of my favorite rainy day songs from a fantastic singer-songwriter, Beth Orton. Song’s called “Concrete Sky.” Makes me wanna see California and the sequoias:
