EVENING COFFEE: Instant political brew

February 18th, 2009 6:43 pm · 5 comments

Starbucks announced this week it will sell instant coffee, called Via (Associated Press).

Newsroom brew by my side tonight, trying to wrap my mind around Starbucks offering instant coffee. Their brand will be called Via, and at first Colombia (medium) and Italian (dark) roasts will be made available. My take: If you like Maxwell House or Folgers, give Via a try and see what you think. Otherwise, I’ll take my coffeehouse brews, thank you very much.

Our local political world is a little more settled now that Craig Ebersole has been named chairman of the Lancaster County Republican Committee. Ebersole is an even-tempered man, deeply devoted to his family, the calm voice in the middle of a storm. I’ll be interested in seeing how he handles the first internal fight among candidates or committee people. I imagine him as a thoughtful mediator, but does he have the charisma to convince jousting factions to cool their tempers? We’ll wait and see.

In other nooks of this crazy political realm:

*Paging Gov. Sarah Palin. Mrs. Palin, you owe back taxes.

*State Sen. JeffPiccola, a Hershey Republican, sees Gov. Ed Rendell’s video poker plan for tuition help, and he raises the Democrat an alternative plan worth $145 million to give the kiddies an easier time at affording college.

Anything anybody can do about my tens of thousands of dollars worth of college debt? I could cut back on my caffeine consumption … nah.

Personally I think all the coffee at Starbucks is lousy. I prefer to buy green beans from Sumatra and roast my own. The beans at Starbucks are as stale along as with the political analysis.

Dragonrider,

You have definitely earned a new level of my respect. What do you use to roast? And I'm sure you've had some horror stories when things have gone wrong. Care to share any?

Ha! Sara Palin owes back taxes from the time she cheated the taxpayers by charging a per diem while in her own home.
I guess it isn't just Obama's people who are crooks, but Palin is supposed to be better than everyone else, or so the salespitch goes.

A roaster can be as simple as a jiffy hot air popper. You roast until you hear 1st crack or until the color is to your liking. I use a more advance model that is programable with different roasting temps and times. It uses a three tier heating program followed by automatic 4 minute cooling cycle. What I like is the chaff collection with out that chaff kinda gets spread around. My worst experience was trying a different model of jiffy popper that blew coffee beans all over my kitchen. I have burned a couple of batches, each type of bean is different in roasting profile. You gotta watch the roast to get it right.

There are web site devoted to coffee roasting that give specifics on how to roast using a jiffy popper. You can still find them used at Goodwill for 5 dollars. By the way Green beans cost half as much as roasted beans.
