The Santorum interview

Former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum (LNP Archive)I don’t doubt this post will grab a little attention from my colleague at the Sunday News because former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum discussed with the issues of the race with the Nest and how the campaign is shaping up in Pennsylvania.

Anytime you hear Santorum extolling the virtues of a McCain presidency, it’s a compelling conversation since Santorum once said having the Arizona senator in the White House would be “very, very dangerous” for Republicans. He based that on McCain’s tendency to reach across the aisle for compromise solutions rather than rally with the GOP Senate Caucus, of which Santorum was the third ranking member.

Santorum began changing his tone in April after McCain secured enough delegates in the GOP primary to become the presumptive Republican nominee. What sealed Santorums support, the former senator said, were two developments: McCain’s performance at the Saddleback forum on religion and the selection of Sarah Palin as the vice presidential nominee. Both solidified McCain’s credentials among cultural conservatives, Santorum said, and could very well put McCain over the top in the battle for Pennsylvania’s 21 electoral votes.

While McCain isn’t immune from a Santorum shot (he said McCain’s message about greed on Wall Street is sometimes “too populist), Santorum talked about what he perceives as “wealth redistribution” throughout Barack Obama’s tax platform. See the post below for context.

The article will appear in tomorrow’s Intelligencer Journal, and I’ll leave this post with Santorum’s answer about his political future:

Not in the near future, let’s just put it that way. I still have a couple of good years left, and I’m pursuing a lot of great things in the private sector where I think I can make a difference. I never say never, but I have no current plans, but I certainly plan to stay involved in the arena.

I get the same uneasy feeling from Rick Santorum endorsing McCain as Bush endorsing him.
