COLUMN PREVIEW: For Sept. 15, 2008

The three most frequent things I heard about Sarah Palin last week were:

  • “She’s just like one of us.”
  • “Has anybody taken a close look at her record? People need to know about this stuff.”
  • “How soon before Tina Fey returns to SNL to spoof Palin?”

Ask and ye shall receive. Fey helped open the new SNL season last weekend with this:

I mention this because in this week’s column, I look at Quinnipiac University’s latest poll of Pennsylvanians, which put Democrat Barack Obama above Republican John McCain by just three percentage points, making it a statistical dead heat. One of the items that stood out to me was the 42 percent of Democrats said they hadn’t heard enough about Palin to render an opinion. Are you kidding me? Aren’t we all on a little Palin overload, right now? She’s not only made the cover of national newszines, she’s been on Entertainment Tonight and gave an interview to People. And now she’s reached the ultimate height of political stardom - a caricature on Saturday Night Live (Fey nails the accent, doesn’t she?).

I’d love readers to shoot me an e-mail (dpidgeon@lnpnews.com) with some theories about why so many Democrats remain undecided about Palin. I have some of my own, and we’ll compare notes here at the Nest.

Other topics we tackle are U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter’s visit to Lancaster County Prison tomorrow morning and the Legislature is back in Harrisburg.
