The “present” situation

September 4th, 2008 10:26 pm · 4 comments

One thing many Republicans love is decisive leadership. They want that leader who can make choices using his or her gut instincts, which is one thing that helped sink Democrat John Kerry’s campaign in 2004 and could significant damage Barack Obama’s in 2008.

Hillary Clinton tried to use this tactic in the Democratic primary, but I think the GOP will be more effective - taking Obama to task for voting “present” 129 times in the Illinois state Senate. What voting “present” means is avoiding a “yes” or “no” vote for whatever reason. Now, according to the Associated Press, Obama did this 129 times out of more than 4,000 votes, which boils down to 1 in every 31, but the GOP’s gonna throw this out there as a way to paint Obama as indecisive.

I asked U.S. Sen. Bob Casey Jr. about this issue, which the GOP used several times last night. Here’s what he said:

One of the benefit of a real tough primary is a lot of these issues have already (been talked about). It’s fear and smear, divide and conquer. They’re going to try the scorch-the-earth tactics, adn that’s not going to work.

I think Senator Casey missed the point, and Obama had better find an appropriate answer.

Bob Casey jr is in the tank for Obama as pay back for his dad being snubbed in 1992. Why do you think he went against his constituent's wishes and endorsed Obama?
Other than one 527 pointing out Obama's long time ties to terrorist William Ayers and his terrorist wife Bernadine Dohrn there has been relatively little on broadcast TV. I'm sure that there more to come as we get deeper into the election season.

McCain avoided tough votes by just not showing up, even if he was in Washington:

"Keeping America Secure Act"; a Biden amendment for additional COPS; 10 of 14 Iraq votes; all 8 votes on renewable energy; a Democratic amendment for $44 billion for veteran care (which he verbally opposed) and additional resources for VA hospitals he said he supported; the expansion of the GI bill; every major environmental bill (even ones he said he supported); a worker training program; and bills with pork he opposed.

Campaigning does take its toll on voting. McCain has missed 407 in the 110th Congress, 63% of all votes.

Obama's present votes have been explored before. While it is unknown how many of those 129 votes could be reasonably classified as avoiding issues, clearly, present votes in the Illinois senate does not always mean avoiding a tough decision.

Always an excuse.

How much time has Obama missed this year due to campaigning?

129 "Present" votes proves he stands for one thing Obama. How many of those "Present" votes helped kill legislation he promised his constituents?
