Upping the ante

Whatever you can do I can do better … That’s the feeling out of Harrisburg now that Gov. Rendell’s administration is threatening to furlough state workers if the budget isn’t passed by June 30, according to the Associated Press:

Naomi Wyatt, Gov. Ed Rendell’s secretary of administration, told state employees that if the governor and Legislature have not agreed on a new state budget by midnight on June 30, furloughs will begin immediately.

“We remain hopeful that we will not have to implement our impasse contingency plans, but we need to be prepared,” Wyatt said in a letter.

This comes about a week after Senate Republicans, the most powerful of the four Legislative caucuses, declared they would not return for the lame-duck session in November, effectively slicing 30 days off the time to get much of Rendell’s agenda done.
