Clinton’s speech in New York

June 2nd, 2008 4:45 pm · 0 comments

Hillary Clinton announced she would give a post-primary speech in New York on Tuesday night, right after the final primaries in Montana and South Dakota wrap up. That’s unusual. Will she concede the race to Barack Obama? Will she vow to fight on to the convention? Anyone’s guess, but it makes for one of the most dramatic moments of this campaign so far.

This on the day after her national campaign co-chair, former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack, had this to say:

“It does appear to be pretty clear that Senator Obama is going to be the nominee. After Tuesday’s contests, she needs to acknowledge that he’s going to be the nominee and quickly get behind him.”

The same article goes on to explain how Clinton has begun beckoning superdelegates who have already pledged to back Obama to switch sides, something I doubt very much many would do. An exhausted party, especially after the debacle this weekend in front of the DNC rules committee, would want to end this sooner rather than later.

Update: Via Marc Ambinder at the Atlantic:

Clinton Campaign staffers and former campaign staffers are being urged by the Clinton campaign’s finance department to turn in their outstanding expense receipts by the end of the week. That’s a sign, to them, that the campaign wants to get its affairs in order soon. If Clinton were staying in the race, there’d be no real reason to collect these receipts now; she’d still be raising and spending money from the same primary campaign account. The campaign is in arrears to the tune of about $11 million.
