Primary election reform

May 1st, 2008 4:03 pm · 0 comments

There are subtle movements in the state House to drastically change who’s eligibile to participate in primary elections. As the Nest noted earlier, state Rep. Jaret Gibbons proposed allowing independents to vote in either the Republican or Democratic primary (but not both), and a quick check on House Bill 2482’s status shows no legislative action has been taken. Hasn’t even been assigned a committee.

At the same time, state Rep. Richard Grucela of Northampton County is pushing a bill (HB 520) that would allow 17-year-olds to vote in a primary so long as they turn 18 by the General Election. The bill is currently before the State Government Committee, and a hearing is scheduled for next week.
