Financing the Smucker campaign

April 11th, 2008 8:40 am · 1 comment

What seems like ages ago, Lloyd Smucker, a Republican candidate for the 13th state Senate District, told the Sunday News he had raised an astounding $185,000, proof that he had widespread support among potential constituents in the district.

That doesn’t appear to have happened. According to Smucker’s campaign finance report, due out today, the businessman and West Lampeter Township supervisor donated $121,060 of his own money to his campaign, more than $90,000 in the last eight days. His total fundraising for this campaign is $246,784, which means he only raised about $125,000, far less than he said he did.

After making the claim that his campaign had raised $185,000, some in the community and even this reporter asked him to release the donor list so as to confirm the amount. Smucker declined to, saying he would make the list public only when mandated by state law. That day is today.
