Olympic Boycott

April 7th, 2008 3:20 pm · 7 comments

Police officers in Britian try to prevent protesters from disrupting the torch relay. (Associated Press)The journey of the Olympic torch to Beijing has been interrupted by protests in Europe. Hillary Clinton’s calling on President Bush to boycott the opening ceremonies this summer. Only a matter of time before serious calls for a U.S. athlete boycott of the Summer Games begins to grow.

If momentum for a boycott grows, don’t forget about this: U.S. Rep. Joe Pitts, a Republican who represents Lancaster County, has called on China to condemn and reverse human rights abuses in its home country, Burma, North Korea and Sudan. If they don’t, he’s proposed a U.S. boycott of the Olympics and gone so far as to co-sponsor legislation (House Resolution 610).

I am 100% behind a boycott of the olympics in China....but I wish they could be held at an alternate site. These athletes work so hard and they shouldn't be punished IMHO.

Ironic that a country with current and former administration members who can no longer leave the country for fear of war crimes charges based on torture, Gonzales, Yoo, Rumsfeld, Cheney et al are calling for boycott of another country that tortures. HUH :>(

Thats why i don't think we really can boycott, the only people you are punishing are the people that have worked their entire lives to make it to that point. And to pull out to make a policital statement?? Like another poster said, those protests could have easily been towards us if we were holding the games this time around. Come out, condemn whats happening in Tibet, but don't deprive a group of people that have nothing to do with whats going on their chance at their dream.

I do not see where any American has any right to say a word over China's occupation of Tibet ..... Heck, America is currently in a occupation mode! Can anyone deny, that America is now at this very moment occupying the sovereign nations of Iraq and Afghanistan??

American's need to take a hard look at their own nation. We shouldn't worry about how dirty someone else's barn is until we clean out our own!! wink.gif

Hillary Clinton has asked Bush that he skip attending the opening ceremonies as a way of showing our displeasure. Not a full on boycot ala Reagan but a reminder we are not happy about events in Tibet.
But I don't see that as happening.

I was thinking something along those lines as well. In addition, perhaps we could limit coverage of the olympics in some way so that China doesn't directly benefit. In no way should the atheletes be kept from competing though.

On top of that, we borrow billions and billions of money from China. How can we, say its ok to borrow their money and trade with them, then boycott the olympics?

Yeah that brings up another point. And Like RS said, we really have no room to talk about anyone else and how they handle themselves as a country. Thats why i think we just won't do anything. Otherwise we risk the chance of upsetting them and them calling in all our debt. And them doing that at this point in time would be catastrophic.
