The Kennedy Interview

April 4th, 2008 10:43 am · 1 comment

Last hour, I interviewed the venerable U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts, an Obama supporter. I asked him whether superdelegates should vote with their constituencies - a dicey situation for Kennedy since a majority of Mass voters went with Hillary Clinton - or should superdelegates exercise independent judgment.

Here’s his answer:

“The elected delegates, they ought to be the ones (to determine who will be the nominee),” Kennedy said during a telephone interview. “There was a time, another time in our history, when the role for the superdelegate may have been justified, but today we ought to abide by the expressions of the voting public. They are the ones who should control the Democratic nomination, and I think they will. I’m absolutely convinced (Barack Obama) will have the votes and the will of the people.”

The rest of the interview, including what Kennedy suggests superdelegates from Massachusetts should do, will be in the Intelligencer Journal/Lancaster New Era tomorrow morning.

Will of the people? Give me a break. The winner is determined in the early cacuses and primary elections. If we were a sane and rational people primary elections would be held on the same date nation wide and cacuses would be eliminated. But then that's just me.
Oh and by the way, Teddy, the superdelegates are in the rules set by the DNC, they get to cast their vote for the candidate they think can win in November. Got a problem with that? Talk to Dr. Dean about changing the rules.
Right now neither Barak Obama nor Hillary Clinton have enough committed delegates to win the nomination. Per the rules you guys voted on it will be decided by the super delegates, live with it.
