You know, if anyone’s job is on the line in this presidential election, let’s not forget about Howard Dean, the chairman of the DNC. According to G. Terry Madonna of Franklin & Marshall College in a story I wrote this week, the Democrats have a lot going for them in this election - an unpopular war, an unpopular president and a shaky economy, all tied in full or in part to Republicans. Such an election atmosphere would favor Dems in the White House race, but … a lot of speculation out there about the continued Dem infighting between Clinton and Obama and if it will contribute to John McCain changing his address, from Sedona, Ariz., to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
Here at the Nest, I’m watching Dean today with great interest. He’s stepping out for the first time since the Rev. Jeremiah Wright and Bosnia controversies ignited, and now is calling for Democratic superdelegates - party insiders and elected officials who have a separate, independent, highly-influential vote on who the nominee will be - to declare who they support by July 1. Dean said in published reports he wants this to avoid a fight on the floor during the Democratic convention in Denver this August.
One superdelegate declared today (U.S. Sen. Bob Casey Jr. of Pennsylvania for Obama) and with great anticipation, I await the justification for why.
