The Barnstormers have lost another of their key offseason acquisitions. Designated hitter Dario Delgado has left to join the Schaumburg Flyers of the Northern League. It’s being termed a trade for a player to be named later.
During the offseason, manager Frank Klebe recruited Delgado to join the Barnstormers as a reserve. After years as a regular, Delgado struggled to adjust to a part-time role. He decided to take an offer from the Northern League for more money and more at-bats.
“I wanted the best situation for Delgado,” Klebe said. “I asked him what he would like to do. He heard the offer and the options and leaving suited him best for his family and what he’s doing with his life.”
Delgado went 5-for-27 with two doubles and no RBIs in eight games for the Barnstormers. The former Atlantic City Surf star — who had three 20-homer seasons in the Atlantic League from 2003-05 — wanted a starting job. He’s expected to be the everyday third baseman for the Flyers.
“I wish him a lot of luck,” Klebe said. “He’s a good player and he’s always put up good numbers. It’s always tough to lose a guy like that.”
Considering the way the Barnstormers have struggled at the plate, it’s surprising they couldn’t find more consistent playing time for Delgado — especially after Clyde Williams left four games into the season. Delgado hit 83 homers in this league over the past four years.
Former Barnstormer Keith Maxwell and former Surf standout Demetrius Heath also play for Schaumburg.
